Testing the Homemade Watch Winder Circuit





The circuit itself has very few components, and in the picture you’ll see more jumper wires than actual parts going into the circuit. I’ll solder the circuit to a veroboard once I’ve confirmed the circuit, and in that way, you’ll get to see how the whole circuit looks like.

The timings were difficult to attain using discrete components. A more precise way would be to use a programmable chip.

The second problem I had was driving motors other than the one I’ve used, which was taken from an old cassette tape player. Perhaps a new circuit would solve this!

Anyways, this circuit was able to drive my motor at the sequence mentioned. Getting the values was tricky and through many calculations (including trial-and-errors) I’ve managed to achieve close to my preferred winding sequence.


Test Results: -

Timings were recorded using the lap-time function on my cell phone.

The motor seems to turn slightly more than 1 turn which I figure would be good since it’ll be “dragging” a load. And since there’ll be a weight or load (the watch) on the motor, I’ve got to remove any sort of friction or resistance that may oppose the motors rotation. To do this, ball-bearings were used. A pair easily cost $12.00 but it’s a quick solution.

My mechanical design for the unit has to ensure smooth rotations. Well that will be handled later on another day.

To confirm my circuit and component values, further testing is required. I would like to see repeatability to prove this.
