Anyone for a Pre-owned Watch Winder? Inside every watch winder are motors that help rotate the winding pods or the watch holder that in turn winds your watch. Depending on the price, housing design and its rotating drive system, a motor could cost anywhere from a dollar up to a hundred. Of course cheap winders will use the cheapest motor available and with some clever mechanical design, it’ll perform what it’s supposed to do. There are many different types of D.C. (Direct Current) motors available in the market. Brushed motors, brushless motors, servo motors, stepper motors, coreless motors and the list goes on. Watch winder manufacturers carefully selects the type of motor with considerations on the current it consumes, its mechanical lifespan, torque, size and some other proprietary specifications. When buying a new watch winder, there would absolutely be no worries about the unit breaking down soon because the motors are new. Plainly said, its mechanical lifespan has not been used up. A buyer would have to pay top dollar for this and the warranty it comes with. This kind would be good for buyers who have the budget and know what they want in a professional watch winder. Reconditioned units may have their exterior refurbished as new and/or some general servicing done. The motor in such units may or may not have been replaced. So, buyers need to ask when buying such units. The period of Warranty would be shorter or the seller would maybe state a seven day one-to-one exchange arrangement. These kinds of units are cheaper than a newer ones and normally sold by owners through shops. Buyers who buy such units are perhaps mechanically inclined to repair it themselves or have a lower budget. Pre-owned watch winders are units that sellers put on the market for sale and are in a “as-is” condition, meaning there are no servicing or part replacements done. The sellers are perhaps people who have increased (or decreased) their number of watches owned and no longer requires it. There would be no warranty given for this but the price would be a steal. Do note that the mechanical lifespan of its motor is significantly shorter though. Since the price is very much cheaper, usually novices or budget-conscious users would go for such units. As in every mechanical device, there are bound to be mechanical failures. Another root-cause of failures is by the users who unintentionally cause them. Watch Winders are electro-mechanical devices made by companies with in-depth knowledge of an automatic watch. Although the theory of its intended purpose is simple, the design is quite complex and requires continued research as more automatic watches make its entry into our market. Buying a timepiece worth thousands and a winder worth hundreds makes logical sense. Buy a new Watch Winder; something you’ll never regret. Labels: Pre-owned Watch Winders
