My Definition of a Basic Watch Winder

In my opinion, a basic Watch Winder is an entry-level unit that only has only the key features to keep a watch wound. It may or may not have an enclosure but still have factory pre-set TPD and Direction to it.



I would consider the Eilux single-watch winder a good entry-level winder. It has just the winding direction to worry about. TPD has been pre-set to 900TPD so you don’t have to figure out which TPD works best for your watch. The main concern here is about the motor it uses. I don’t have a unit that I can test out so I wouldn’t be able to give you my comments. But from what I’ve seen on the web, some units fail to wind a heavy watch. Perhaps, its just one bad unit out of the many good ones they sold.

The basic winder unit has the simplest functions for a sophisticated job of winding your timepiece.

Of course the Orbita Sparta series would also be a good choice but when it comes to cost, the Eilux would be the preferred choice. In terms of performance, the Sparta outshines in many ways.

The Taiwan company Abest makes comparatively low cost winders but I find it too complicated having about 8TPD selections (if I recall) to be classified as an entry-level winder.

Since you are making the purchase, you should know how much to spend on a winder unit. Be prudent and know what you want.
