Good Things Come in Small Packages I designed and made the housing last month but didn’t get to assemble it entirely until yesterday. I was trying to build a functional winder in the smallest possible form factor. Here's the finished product There's only a power switch at the back of the unit. TPD has been pre-set to about 900TPD and it winds in an alternating direction. Nothing easier than to insert my watch and turn ON the power. The unit is powered by 4x AAA drycells. As usual, I’ve used PU Leather for its durability and resilience instead of PVC, which is prone to peeling after a while. The front window is real glass. I’ve pre-set the microprocessor (PIC) to turn clockwise 40 times and then counter-clockwise for another 40 times before resting 20 minutes. This will repeat 10 times for each direction, giving a total of 800TPD both ways. This would best suit any Rolex which requires a minimum of 650 up to 800 turns to maintain its torque. After 5 hours, the unit will be on “stand-by” awaiting the next winding cycle. In alternating the winding direction for this unit, I was just spreading the “wear” of the motor gears and it has nothing to do with the timepiece. As I know Rolex winds bi-directionally. In saying so, many people I’ve noticed are confused with this word “Bi-directional Winding”. Bi-directional winding simply means that the timepiece can be wound either in a clockwise or in an anti-clockwise direction. Most people take it that it has to wind first CW and then CCW (or vice-versa) to maintain its torque. Setting my winder to a CW only or CCW only direction would still wind my Rolex. So folks, if your winder unit has only two winding directions, don’t worry! It’s the TPD settings and motor quality you should be worried about. My friend has kindly volunteered to “test-drive” this unit and will keep me posted on the results. Specifications: - - Single-watch Winder - Pre-set TPD @ 800 turns - Battery-operated with 4 AA cells - Turn-Rest-Sleep Function - Triple-state LED indicator - PU Leather exterior and velvet interior with glass window Labels: Single Watch Winder
